About Me

Hi, My name is Makeda White. I am currently an intern at Bronze Magazine. I'm scheduled to graduate from Hofstra University this spring with my M.A. in journalism. My dream job is to work for Madame Noir, Refinery 29, or O, The Oprah Magazine. My interest in journalism is social justice and minority issues. But I have experience writing pop culture and entertainment pieces. I  also have experience in social media, previously I worked as a Social Media Coordinator for BET.

My original story idea for my capstone had nothing to do with the coronavirus. My interest was in CUNY schools and the large population of their students battling hungry insecurities due to the financial restraint of pursuing higher education. But as the COVID-19 began to spread and close down schools and states, I began to wonder about the people who already were suffering prior to the lock-downs and quarantines. From there my interest blossomed as reports started to come out about how Black and Brown communities were disproportionately contracting and dying from the coronavirus at higher rates than their white counterparts. As a young Black woman, I wondered what was influencing the way the coronavirus affected minority communities, particularly my community. From there my story began,  my capstone is composed of quotes from doctors, medical writers, personal anecdotes from essential workers, and much more. If you have any further questions email me contact me, here.

This site is will give an in-depth look at the reasons why COVID-19 is disproportionately affecting Black and Brown communities throughout the nation, with a focal point in Bronx, NY. The Bronx has been labeled the "coronavirus capital" by the Washingtonpost and other national news sites. Currently, the Bronx is the most heavily affected borough in NY. This site will explain the various factors that contribute to the spread of the COVID-19 within the Bronx through the personal perspective of Bronx residents, City/State officials, and doctors. Some of the terminology and content discussed will be further explained in videos and graphs throughout the site.
